In the 2016 blog post “The Election, Lao Tzu, a Cup of Water,” author Ursula K. Le Guin (1929–2018) writes about wanting “to live with courage, with compassion, in patience, in peace.” She finds these qualities in the way of water: in the flow of a river, in a cup of water, in the running water and sea, and in the many other peaceful manifestations of water’s nourishing beauty.

For Le Guin, the way of water provides useful metaphors for how to be in relation to the world. Water is always in motion, pursuing its course despite obstacles and still yet continuing to be itself. It is passive but forceful, yielding but wielding, and always adaptable.

For me, water is akin to art and the work of artists, they connect us to one another in visible and invisible networks through time and space.

How might you “be like water” during this time of chaos and uncertainty?
